"Society is a ship whose engine is technology and rudder is ethics; history bears plenty of witness to the wrecks caused by technologies that developed ahead of ethics. There is no reason to think sustainability is any different."

Me with a silver-laced Wyandotte in the garden.

Mike brewed a batch of very delicious root beer since we were digging sassafras out of the blueberry patch, so naturally, homemade ice cream seemed in order. Yay, floats!!

Soap and Bread

Here's a pot of soap at the beginning stages. Our soap is a combination of olive oil and coconut oil, which lathers nicely and feels really smooth on the skin. We use a cooking process to cure the soap for immediate use.

Loaf of soap fresh from the (recycled) mold, ready to be cut into bars.

Rosemary lavender soap, with rosemary from Wee Farm.

I've been wanting to try soap-making for a long time. When our cows come fresh again, I'd like to try raw milk soaps, and more combos with our herbs and flowers. I don't enjoy harsh, drying soaps from the store, especially after researching long chemical names I couldn't pronounce. I choose not to use soaps with chemicals linked to disruption of the endocrine system (SLS), so making my own seems the best way to control what goes on my skin.  Plus they smell yummy!
Emily wants to sell brick-oven bread at the market; below is the first test loaf.
